Filmen utspelar sig på 70-talet och skildrar den amerikanske författaren Roland och hans fru Vanessas vistelse i en idyllisk fransk hamnstad. Deras äktenskap befinner sig i kris, men i takt med att de lär känna andra i byn, såsom det nygifta paret på bröllopsresa (Laurent och Poupaud) samt lokalborna Michel (Arestrup) och Patrice (Bohringer) börjar paret så sakta ta itu med de olösta konflikterna i deras liv.
