Filmen baseras på hiphop-producenten Russell Simmons liv, den unge producenten Russell Walker har alla de nya heta artisterna på sin label "Krush Groove records". Dessa inkluderar bland annat Run-DMC, Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde och Kurtis Blow. När Run-DMC får en hit och Russell inte har råd att trycka tillräckligt med skivor tar han ett lån av en knarklangare, vilket självklart leder till trubbel.
