Flickan Alexis är född döv. Som genom ett trollslag återfår hon hörseln när hon blir vittne till ett brutalt mord där hennes krigstraumatiserade pappa slår ihjäl hennes mamma och bror. Den fruktansvärda upplevelsen väcker också en latent synestesi – Alexis inte bara hör vissa ljud utan upplever dem genom alla sinnen i en allomfattande extatisk sinnesupplevelse. Den förmågan leder henne att senare som vuxen ge sig in på en karriär som DJ och musiker.
