Sportjournalisten Eddie Willis slår sig ihop med boxningspromotorn Benko. Tillsammans lyckas de övertyga både publiken och Toro Moreno själv att den jättelika och klumpiga boxaren faktiskt skulle kunna vinna världsmästerskapet i tungvikt. Genom en rad arrangerade matcher växer Toros dröm om att erövra bältet. Men hans dröm krossas brutalt i samma ögonblick som han träffas av mästarens nävar.
