Historien utspelar sig i Gobiöknen, där vi får följa löjtnant Li och det japanska sändebudet Lai Xi, båda förstklassiga krigare och svärdmästare. Efter årtionden i tjänst hos kejsaren, längtar Lai Xi hem till Japan, men han skickas istället västerut för att jaga efterlysta brottslingar.
